Foreword By The Editor
The following article by Chris Channing is about a very topical health problem of today: hearing loss. Why is it topical? Well, despite all the recent advances in various fields of medicine, the general standard of hearing, particularly in the young, is in decline. The reasons for this decline are covered in the article.

Sound is one of the five senses we use each day to communicate and interact with others. Too much of a good thing can actually be a bad thing however, as environmental noise can easily reduce your ability to hear even as an adult. Reducing your exposure to unnecessary noise can go a long way.
A study recently released showed that the new generations of the human species will probably experience more extreme hearing loss. This has been attributed to the rise of MP3 players and music in general. Because devices such as the iPod have been in wide circulation, and are constantly used, more wear and tear is being suffered by the ears every day than previously. It is recommended that noise volumes, where possible, need to be kept to a minimum.
Environmental Noise
We are constantly being bombarded with sound waves and often more so at work than anywhere else. Unless you work in a library (consider yourself lucky if you do), your hearing can be impacted by environments where you interact with other people, machinery, and other environment sounds. Although hard to avoid, creative thinking can find solutions.
The environment in terms of sound can contribute to hearing loss but so can your hygiene. Having a bad sense of hygiene can lead to infection, as in the case of not thoroughly cleaning out your ear canal on a regular basis. Not doing so will contribute to an excess of ear wax, which can attract bacteria and eventually lead to a painful sickness of the inner ear. It’s not just painful, it damages your hearing!
Hearing Protection
Active protection of your hearing isn’t always possible. Sometimes you have to learn through trial and error what your body can handle. The first few times you go to a loud concert and notice your hearing degrading, you should make the smart decision to use ear protection. Better yet, take good advice and use hearing protection even when going to your first concert!
An alarming statistic shows that the reason why most young adults and teens don’t wear ear protection is because they think it would make them appear like the black sheep of their social group. Have confidence in protecting your body from the elements and don’t be afraid to show it when you go to an environment with a lot of damaging background noise.
In Conclusion
Your health is the most important thing you have and protecting it is actually easy. Just take time to figure out where you can improve the health of your ears. If damage has already been done, you may actually need to obtain a custom hearing aid.
